Savannah Police to spend $54K per drone on new technology

Seven years after first deploying drones, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) is working towards modernizing its aerial technology by replacing aging equipment with newer models officials say will allow officers to do their jobs more effectively.

SPD Assistant Police Chief Robert Gavin said the department currently operates three drones that have reached “end of life” after years of use. The department plans to replace them with three new models as part of an ongoing effort to integrate technology into everyday policing.

The drones are currently used during special operations, missing person cases, traffic investigations, SWAT operations and large public events. People can see the drones flying around during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and city-wide parades, as well as accident reconstruction…
