Neenah’s clock tower used to be part of City Hall. Here’s the history

If you’ve ever visited downtown Neenah, chances are you passed the clock tower. It now stands alone, but the block was once home to Neenah’s City Hall. The newspaper archives gives us a look at the original structure that was completed in 1889 and stood at the corner of Cedar Street and Doty Avenue.

The cornerstone was laid March 28, 1889, in which were placed copies of the city newspapers, coins, and other relics of the day, according to a story published Dec. 9, 1889 in the Neenah Daily Times. The story included a detailed line drawing of the structure.

A description of the building read: “The size of the building is 83 by 65; three stories; solid stone 13 feet, 5 feet from first floor; the balance of brick. The tower is 120 feet from level of the street.” The cost was about $27,000, and was built under plans by Wm. Waters of Oshkosh…
