WASHINGTON, D.C. – The city of Tulsa took a step toward gaining a 10th sister city Friday, as a representative of Mayor Monroe Nichols signed a ‘friendship’ partnership agreement with officials from the city of Sumy, Ukraine. With a population of about 250,000, Sumy sits close to the Russian border in northeastern Ukraine and has been a frequent target of Russian attacks since the start of Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion almost four years ago.
Representing Tulsa at the signing ceremony, held at the Washington Hilton, was Aron York, Mayor Nichols’ Director of Policy and Executive Initiatives. Representing Sumy was Serhii Dmytrenko, Director of the Municipal Property Department, Sumy City Council. Also in attendance was the Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S., Olha Stefanishyna. Both Mayor Nichols and Sumy’s acting mayor, Artem Kobzar, participated in the event online.
