On Jan. 31, there was a huge Labor Against ICE rally in South Portland that ended with a march to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building. Both were nonviolent. The most aggressive things I heard were “show your face” and “quit your job!”
Minutes later, agents opened fire. Pepperballs, followed immediately by flashbang and gas grenades, shattered glass at a low-income apartment building. Several square blocks covered in dense smoke as they fired rubber bullets at family members. Kids were choking from the tear gas. All unjustified violence.
What good is a judge’s order if these agents will do as they please anyway? (“Judge restricts federal use of tear gas, munitions at Portland ICE protests,” Feb. 3). They actually laugh about causing harm. Remember the agents asking, if we’d learned a lesson after Renee Good was murdered? We have. And that’s why we must stop them.I’m no “paid protester.” Just a legally blind former Republican with conditions from asthma to diabetes to stage 4 cancer. I should be worrying about my insulin and chemo. Trump’s health care cuts for you!…
