West Oʻahu communities clean up after powerful winds and heavy rain

WAIANAE, Hawaii (Island News) — The west side of Oahu is continuing cleanup efforts after a powerful storm brought heavy rain and wind gusts reaching up to 55 miles per hour over the weekend.

Down-sloping winds from the Wai’anae Mountains caused damage across several leeward coast beach parks, including Kahe, Nanakuli, and Maʻili, knocking over large plants and trees and creating hazardous conditions near the shoreline.

Ocean Safety officials advised the public to stay away from the sand during the storm as crews prepared for the impacts.

“We did shutter our towers just to prevent any further damage to the windows and hinges,” said Blake Caporoz, Lieutenant with Ocean Safety. “We kept our lifeguards safe by keeping them in their vehicles, away from trees.”…
