Venice wants 1,000 acres added to annexation agreement

VENICE — The amount of land contemplated for possible annexation by the city could nearly double if Sarasota County agrees to amend the joint planning agreement between them.

The City Council gave Planning and Zoning Director Roger Clark the go-ahead at its Feb. 2 strategic planning workshop to approach the county to enter into discussions about adding 985 acres of land, maybe more, to the agreement.

Council Member Ron Smith said he is on board with the JPA talks as long as adding land to the agreement wouldn’t mean the construction of new public safety or utilities facilities…
