Judge sets trial date for youth after allowing disputed confession to stand

Having refused to exclude a confession as evidence, a Lucas County judge set a May 11 trial date for a 17-year-old boy charged with an 18-year-old’s shooting death early last year.

Michael Silvera, of the 200 block of Leland Avenue, is charged with aggravated murder, murder, first-degree robbery, and second-degree felonious assault — all with firearm specifications — for the Jan. 4, 2025, death of Jaidon Mangas.

Through his lawyer, Ronnie Wingate, young Silvera sought to have suppressed a confession he made during police interrogation because a detective refused to summon his mother to the Safety Building unless the boy first agreed to say what he was willing to talk about…
