NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The Charleston County Council will vote Tuesday night on the first major test of its promise to address the region’s housing crisis.
Cordelia on the Rivers, a four-story 129-unit apartment building, would reserve 53 units as affordable housing for families making between 60 and 80% of the county’s median income. The project would have 41% of all units be considered affordable, well above the program’s 10% minimum requirement.
The development is the first project under the Universal Tax Exemption Program to reach that level within the county. The program incentivizes developers to create multi-family rental complexes through tax breaks for 15 years until the property is reevaluated.
