Arkansas Storm Team Blog: ARDOT salt usage in the latest winter storm from the AST Thunder

The late January winter storm in Arkansas had a definite impact on the roads and infrastructure of the state. The Arkansas Department of Transportation worked tirelessly to clear the ice and snow from roads. But as of Tuesday, February 10, there’s still salt, sand, and snirt (snow and dirt) piles on the roads and other shaded spots.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation reported on Tuesday that they’re still gathering final numbers, but preliminary data shows that they used 3 million gallons of salt brine and 40,000 tons of salt on Arkansas roads for the winter storm. Some districts still have to finalize inventory counts, so these are estimated totals.

While Tuesday into early Wednesday features a small rain chance, better rain chances come Friday (February 13) into Sunday (February 15). This late-week system will bring widespread rain and beneficial totals, as the state still sits in a drought. This rain will also be beneficial as it will help to break up some of the large snirt piles. Not all of them will be fully washed away; some of these piles will be around for quite some time, despite the warmer days.
