USA Climbing project gets awkward with likely demolition of historic Mattress Company building [Opinion]

Just as its new funding request is being considered by SLC’s Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) Board this week, USA Climbing’s National Training Center project at 300 S and 500 W in the Rio Grande district also reaches the city’s planning commission on Wednesday for design review.

The funding request, for $250,000 of additional public money, will enable USA Climbing (USAC) to demolish and rebuild in place the Salt Lake City Mattress Company building, the rehabilitation and reuse of which has been a long-standing priority of the CRA. On Tuesday the CRA Board will make a decision on that request and the fate of the building.

Outside City Hall, the winds of criticism for the project have again kicked up. USA Climbing’s former CEO has lobbied city council members to oppose the commercial gym component of the National Training Center, and gym owners across the country have submitted a new letter of protest to the city council…
