Early morning rope rescue at Smothers Park saves person in distress

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEVV) — Emergency crews responded to a dramatic early morning rescue Wednesday after a person was reported in distress in the cascading water feature at Smothers Park.

According to officials, Station 1 was alerted at approximately 4:15 a.m. to the situation. Initial reports indicated it was unclear whether the individual could be reached by boat from below or if rescuers would need to deploy ladders and ropes from above due to the challenging terrain.

Upon arrival, personnel from the second crew on Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Command 95 quickly assessed the scene and determined a low-angle rope rescue would be the safest and most effective method…
