Carolina Gold menu item at Greenville schools rooted in southern tradition

Something new is coming to the lunch menu at Greenville County Schools, and it’s rooted in southern tradition.

J.L. Mann High School students in Greenville were the first to experience the culture and flavor of Carolina Gold Rice on Friday, Feb. 6, during a U.S. History class led by teacher George Lafaye. Students were also served menu items aligned with South Carolina agriculture, featuring breaded chicken drumsticks, Charleston red rice with smoked sausage made with Carolina Gold Rice, local collard greens, black-eyed peas, and cornbread.

State Commissioner Hugh Weathers attended the event to announce the launch of Certified SC Cafeteria, a state-funded initiative.
