Sitting down with Fermi America as they await TCEQ permits

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Last week, Fermi America confirmed that construction on its “Project Matador” site near Amarillo was paused, while the company awaits permitting from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Fermi America’s chief marketing and communications officer, Cathy Landtroop, said the TCEQ and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allow you to get your horizontal construction done in preparation for the vertical construction on a power plant like Fermi’s. She said they got all the way they could with the horizontal construction in the first phase, and she says they are up against the TCEQ permit, which is the clean air permit, which she says they are excited about getting across the finish line and start the next phase, which is vertical construction.

Landtroop said they got ahead of schedule on their first phase.

“You know, you think about it, it’s going to be 76 degrees today in February. We had a very, very mild winter, and we probably picked up 15 days or so of not having a bunch of snow and sleet out there on the site, that also helped us get ahead. Those things are going to happen, and that part of it. The TCEQ meeting is February 25, so we realized last week we are probably a month ahead of schedule, but that’s ok, that’s going to be a part of it, you build a house, or neighborhood development, that’s part of it.
