AURORA (KDVR)— Aurora City Council members discussed a proposed retail license Monday night for businesses that sell tobacco products, saying the goal is to prevent youth access through local licensing and compliance checks.
Supporters emphasized the ordinance does not include a ban on flavored products. Instead, it would require local licensure and strengthen enforcement to ensure retailers are complying with state and federal age restrictions.

“What tobacco retail licensing does is ensures that stores are not selling to anyone under 21,” said Eric Heydorn with the American Heart Association. “Keeping these products out of the hands of kids will keep them from becoming users of tobacco and nicotine products as adults.”
Health advocates said tobacco remains a leading cause of preventable and premature death in Colorado and argue that stronger local oversight could help reduce long-term nicotine addiction.
