The Boston City Council voted unanimously today to urge the MBTA to keep South Station and other transit facilities open during declared winter emergencies so no more homeless people suffer the fate of Carvell Curry, 62, who died of exposure just outside the station on the night of Dec. 5.
Councilor Miniard Culpepper (Roxbury, South End, Fenway), who introduced the resolution to change the current policy, under which South Station doors are shut after normal operating hours, called the policy “inhumane, unethical and immoral.”
“At some point, we have to ask ourselves, when does enforcement of accessibility and property policies outweigh human life?” he said, adding that Curry “was known by outreach workers, health care providers, community members as a generous and kind person who looked out for others.”…
