PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – George Washington’s Birthday, also commonly celebrated as Presidents Day, will affect city services, as it is observed as a federal holiday. This year, the holiday falls on Feb. 16, 2026.
Hampton Roads Transit says all of its services will operate on their regular schedule on Presidents Day. The Customer Service Call Center will be available from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Feb. 16, 2026.
Chesapeake
All City of Chesapeake offices, courts, community centers, public libraries, and Chesapeake Animal Services will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16. The Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be no changes to trash collection schedules.
Hampton
The City of Hampton observes the Presidents Day holiday. City offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026.
Newport News
In recognition of Presidents Day, Newport News city offices, courts and libraries will be closed on Feb. 16, 2026. Schools are closed, but 12-month employees report.
Norfolk
The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including recreation centers, libraries, The Slover, Norfolk Animal Care Center, Norfolk Courthouse, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer’s Office and Norfolk Department of Public Health, will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16.
There are no trash or recycling collections, or street sweeping operations scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16. Bulk item pickup requests for Tuesday, Feb. 17, must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.
Portsmouth
The City of Portsmouth offices, libraries and museums will be closed on Feb. 16, 2026. Trash collection will continue as scheduled.
Suffolk
In observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday, Suffolk City offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026. Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled from February17 to 20. TFC Recycling will also conduct its normal recycling collection routes duringthis time. Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Recreation Centers (Kings Fork,Creekside, Northern Shores, Oakland, Booker T. Washington, Mack Benn, Jr.)will be closed Monday, February 16.
