CLEVELAND (WJW) — An 80-mile crack opened up across Lake Erie’s ice over the weekend.
It’s so massive, it’s visible from space!Just when you thought Lake Erie would be entirely frozen over for the first time in 30 years, the large crack, that stretches from Canada to Cleveland, opened up.

The crack is estimated to be about 80 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide. A satellite captured the image below from space:
The bitter cold had frozen more than 95% of the lake, but powerful winds and shifting currents underneath created the massive crack.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a warning to anyone thinking about venturing out onto the ice that a dangerous combination of mild temperatures and offshore winds could cause the ice to push away from the Lake Erie shoreline.
