Man charged in deaths of 2 found in Kalamazoo shed

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been charged with murder in the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in a shed in Kalamazoo in 2023, more than a year after investigators think they were killed.

Rajai Brown, 44, was arrested and formally charged Wednesday with two counts of open murder in the deaths of Tarra Mayes and Alfred Simpson, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

A court document shows investigators believe Mayes, 46, and Simpson, 67, died on or around March 13, 2022.

Their bodies were discovered the evening of Aug. 22, 2023, in a shed next to a house on Rose Street between Paterson and Frank streets. A new owner found them while fixing up the property, the court document shows. They were “wrapped up” next to one another in the back of the shed. The document says they were “in an advanced state of decomposition.”
