First United Methodist Church and Respite Ministry will host 30-minute Accessible Ash Wednesday service

First United Methodist Church of Pensacola is proud to offer an accessible 30-minute Ash Wednesday service, in connection with its Respite Ministry – dedicated to serving people living with dementia. This service is open to the community and will offer a judgment-free, safe, and flexible space for those who are unable to sit through a typical worship service. Not limited to individuals with dementia, First Church hopes to welcome all in the community who wish to join, regardless of their abilities.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, which leads up to Easter. Lent is a time of preparation and reflection through prayer and fasting. During this service ashes are placed on foreheads in the shape of a cross. The ashes come from burning palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday.

First Church Respite Ministry is a community ministry, launched in November 2024, which serves individuals living with dementia. A social model of care, Respite is a weekly program that provides a fun, engaging environment for participants to enjoy social and recreational activities in a joyful, community setting while giving their caregivers much-needed respite.
