Private camera footage becoming key in homicide and missing person cases, area sheriffs say

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — Law enforcement agencies across northwest Ohio say private security cameras are becoming a critical tool in solving crimes — often providing the missing piece of evidence they can’t capture through body or dash cameras alone.

Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick said a late‑night homicide outside Port Clinton last year is a prime example. Detectives first turned to a nearby business’s security system after traditional investigative methods came up short.
