Tactics tied to false confessions used in Karen Boes’ murder case, defense witness says

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – An expert in police practices said interviews with Karen Boes following her daughter Robin’s 2002 killing relied on techniques that can elicit false confessions.

Investigators used accusatory techniques, lied about evidence, minimized her involvement and subjected her to hours of interrogation.

“They can actually cause a person to mistrust their memory and create a situation where they may come to believe that even though they have no independent memory, it is possible that they committed the crime,” James Trainum, a former Washington, D.C., Metropolitan police detective, said Thursday, Feb. 12, in Ottawa County Circuit Court.

Boes told police in an interview played in court: “I still don’t believe I did it.”…
