West Michigan economic development plan: 4,500 jobs, $30 hourly wage

GRAND RAPIDS, MI —An economic development group serving West Michigan has launched a new strategic plan that calls for creating and retaining 4,500 jobs, paying an average wage of $30 an hour, over the next three years.

The Right Place’s plan also calls for $700 million in capital investment in its seven-county region by the end of 2028 and $200 million in community development investment. The Grand Rapids-based group also wants to create 100 industry education partnerships.

“Greater Grand Rapids has moved up a weight class,” said Randy Thelen, President and CEO of The Right Place. “We are now competing with larger, more established regions across the country. That speaks to how far we’ve come—but it also challenges us to think and act bigger than ever before.”…
