Millions in overtime, thousands of delay calls: New data reveals toll of bus driver shortage

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A shortage of bus drivers in South Carolina’s largest school district has resulted in thousands of delay notifications to parents and more than $3.3 million in overtime costs over recent years.

Records FOX Carolina Investigates obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show Greenville County Schools sent out 7,101 notification calls about bus delays from August to the first week in November. When the district lists a reason for delays, it’s most often due to a lack of drivers.

Kimberly Reynolds, whose daughter is new to riding the bus, said they often face delays of 30 to 45 minutes, with some reaching an hour and a half…
