Winter Haven tax preparer sentenced, ordered to pay $1.6M: DOJ

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA)— A Winter Haven tax preparer was ordered to pay over $1.6 million in restitution to the IRS after being sentenced to federal prison.

Timothy Smith was sentenced to six years and six months for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aiding and assisting in the filing of false and fraudulent tax returns, the Department of Justice said.

As part of the sentence, the court entered an order of forfeiture of $274,000, the proceeds of the criminal conduct, and Smith has to pay restitution in the amount of $1,637,829.64 to the IRS…
