Amarillo shares results of birds tested for avian flu

The City of Amarillo Animal Management Assistant Director Ty Vernon announced Wednesday, Feb. 11 that tests from birds found dead around area lakes or water ponds have tested “non negative” for avian influenza.

The confusing designation of “non-negative” actually means that of the 18 birds sent off for examination, 12 were found to be “highly suspected and treated as positive” for highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, as announced at the first press conference surrounding the incident last week.

Of the total of 492 birds found diseased or deceased, 18 were sent to a nearby lab in Canyon at the WT lab, and then sent to the national lab site for verification…
