Two truths & no lies: two ICCSD teachers share how their childhood experiences influence their teaching

Advita Arora ’29 speaks with two teachers in the Iowa City Community School District about their negative childhood experiences and how they affected their choice to become teachers. Andrea Flack, a Literacy teacher at Northwest Middle School, and John Cooper, an English teacher at West High School, both had rough childhoods that caused them to aspire to be role models for kids in the school district. Both of them know what it’s like to be bullied or misunderstood, and how hard it can be to act “just fine.” Due to this, they share with the upcoming generation how to persevere through it, especially with the rise of new problems like social media, cyberbullying and feeling excluded.
