Chron.com reporter Gwen Howerton provided a roundup of some of the Texans who have appeared in the Epstein files so far. That would include some Dallas connections, such as a request from Dallas Contemporary for Epstein to loan a painting to the gallery, which Tim already pointed out. But the other Dallas ties include:
- Terry Kafka, a Dallas businessman who moved to Dallas in the 80s and began a billboard company. He says he’s known Epstein since 1958, but his relationship gained notice when Epstein’s birthday book, compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, came to light last year. Maxwell solicited entries from a variety of people, including Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, but Kafka’s letter was “notably more graphic” than most. He later told the Dallas Morning News that he wasn’t proud of the letter.
- Another childhood friend of Epstein’s was the late Dallas optometrist Warren Eisenstein, who also appears in the birthday book. He also served as a character witness for Epstein during his 2007 sex trafficking investigation. His 2014 obituary listed Epstein as one of his “lifelong friends and soul mates.”
- Public relations consultant Merrie Spaeth helped Epstein with crisis consulting during his 2008 guilty plea, helping him draft apologies and coaching him on how to respond in interviews when asked about sex trafficking young women. She said she stopped working with him around that time, but new documents from the Epstein files show she continued to email him to check in. “We’re here if you want help,” she wrote. “We think the world of you.” She later told the Dallas Morning News she was “embarrassed” about that.
