Aiken residents oppose plans to develop former middle school into housing complex

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Residents packed an Aiken County Board of Appeals meeting Thursday night to voice concerns about plans to convert the former Leavelle McCampbell Middle School into an apartment complex.

The historic school, which has been closed for a decade, sits under the shadow of the old Graniteville Mills. Early plans call for developing the property into apartments, with some of the adjacent field converted to a parking lot and pool area.

The drones are designed to be stored inside schools in charging boxes and launched quickly if staff activate a panic button.

“I went to middle school here. This was recess,” said Kayla Scott, who lives in Graniteville. “It’s full of memories, but everything’s dilapidated. Nothing has been restored or taken care of.”…
