A late-night shooting on East Umstead Street Wednesday left a man critically injured; he later died at the hospital, Durham police said. The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Tavarus Joyner. Officers searched for a suspect while investigators processed the scene into the early morning hours.

Durham police told WRAL that officers discovered Joyner at about 11:55 p.m. on the sidewalk next to E. Umstead Street near Sawyer Street, and that a Durham Mobile Command Unit responded to the scene. Forensics crews were seen examining a pile of debris next to the sidewalk while a red car sat inside crime-scene tape.
