Historic rocket heading back to Alabama Welcome Center

ARDMORE, Ala. (WHNT) — A replica of the Saturn 1B is headed back to the Alabama Welcome Center on Interstate 65 in Ardmore, replacing the one that stood at the rest stop for more than 40 years.

The Saturn 1B Rocket once stood at the Ardmore Welcome Center. It was removed in November 2023 because of deterioration, with plans and funding in place for a new, fabricated version to restore the iconic landmark along I-65 near the Tennessee state line.

State officials and legislators, including Rep. Andy Whitt, said lawmakers have secured $7 million in state funds and are working to bring a new replica back.
