Driest since 1890: Drought conditions continue to worsen in Tampa Bay area, across Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Drought conditions continue to worsen across the Tampa Bay area and much of the State of Florida.

The latest Drought Monitor has increased the coverage of Severe and Extreme drought for the west coast of the state.

A prolonged period with little rainfall has exacerbated dry soil conditions, leading to the implementation of water restrictions for many Tampa Bay counties.

  • Tampa: -2.56″
  • St. Pete: -3.11″
  • Sarasota: -1.33″
  • Winter Haven: -1.86″
  • Brooksville: -3.11″

While dry conditions are expected at this time of year, this particular stretch has been abnormally dry with Tampa receiving only 33% of normal rainfall between Sept. 1, 2025, and Jan. 31, 2026.

This is the driest since 1890…
