Houston-area school boards vote to reject daily prayer periods: ‘A logistical nightmare’

At least three Houston-area school boards have rejected a new state law requiring districts to consider adopting daily prayer for students.

Senate Bill 11 tasks school boards with voting by March 1 on whether to establish a district-wide period of prayer and “reading of the Bible or other religious text on each school day” for students and employees.

Cypress-Fairbanks, Pearland and Spring ISDs have voted against designating time for religious activities, citing logistical difficulties. The Houston ISD Board of Managers will consider a resolution rejecting the policy Thursday. So far, it appears that only one Texas school district — Keller ISD near Dallas — has voted to create daily periods of prayer under the law…
