Rockford doctor stresses importance of colonoscopies as colorectal cancer rises among those under 50

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The recent death of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ actor James Van Der Beek and the death of Chadwick Boseman from ‘Black Panther’ a few years ago draws attention to the fact colorectal cancer or colon cancer is not just a threat to older adults.

Concerning statistics

“Colon cancer is still one of the highest, leading causes of cancer death amongst men and women,” emphasized Dr. Thayer Hamoudah, a gastroenterologist at Mercyhealth.

A new study from the American Cancer Society finds colon cancer cases are skyrocketing in young adults, becoming the top cancer killer of Americans younger than 50.

The study reports that while cancer death rates of the age group decreased overall, since 2005, colorectal cancer mortality increased by 1.1% per year, moving it from the fifth most common cancer death in the early 1990s to first in 2023…
