Raw sewage discharge blamed for foul odor in New Orleans East canal

NEW ORLEANS — Residents in New Orleans East say a persistent foul odor near a canal along Dwyer Road has become impossible to ignore, prompting concerns about air quality and potential health risks.

“It smells like a rotten egg,” said Chadsidy Blackstone, who lives near the canal.

“That smell is raw sewage,” said Chris Merritt, an 11-year resident of New Orleans East and a local business owner. “We’re riding with the windows down and my children ask me, ‘Dad, what is that smell?’”…
