CLEVELAND, Ohio – Vasyl Shvets left war-torn Ukraine in October 2023, seeking safety and a new beginning in the United States. Less than two years later, the man who fled violence in his homeland fell victim to it in Cleveland.
Shvets, 27, of Parma, came to Cleveland from Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. He was planning a wedding with his fiancée, to whom he has been engaged since May. They planned on having children and building a new life with a fresh start in America.
“He tried escaping the war for a better life and ended up getting killed here in Cleveland due to the violence,” said Rev. Dmytro Kasiyan of St. Andrew Ukrainian Catholic Church in Parma. “It was a senseless murder because he had no enemies.”…
