How did the Murfreesboro 2035 Comprehensive Plan come to be?

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — More than a decade ago, Murfreesboro needed a revised guidebook for how to shape the city’s foreseeable future.

With input from residents, businesses and consultants, Murfreesboro developed the Murfreesboro 2035 Comprehensive Plan. The roadmap outlines the city’s land use plan with respect to everything from housing, transportation, parks and more.

“Help us make this a plan that is really good for our future,” Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett said at a 2015 meeting. “Not just for yourself, but for your children and grandchildren.”

“I really like this concept and where it’s going, but I do think we’ll be tweaking it along the way,” Erika Becker, a task force member, said at a previous Murfreesboro meeting.

Keeping up with population growth has always been a key focus of the plan. In 2015, the state estimated the city’s population was about 109,000 people. By 2024, that estimate had increased to more than 168,000 people, according to the U.S. Census…
