SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – On Thursday, the Savannah City Council voted unanimously to award the Savannah Powder Magazine a Historic Property Overlay designation (H-P-O-1). This designation means the historic structure now has formal local protections through the city’s zoning ordinance.
The Alderman for the 4th District of Savannah, Nick Palumbo, took to his Facebook page to announce the decision. The Alderman posted the following message:
The Savannah Powder Magazine was built back in 1898 as a facility for the safe storage of dynamite and other explosive materials. Until 1971, it served as the City’s only non-military facility of its kind…
