Baton Rouge General doctors stress ‘every minute matters’ during a heart attack

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — February is Heart Health Month, and cardiologists at Baton Rouge General say knowing the warning signs of a heart attack and acting fast can mean the difference between life and death.

Doctors say when someone is having a heart attack, the heart muscle is being starved of oxygen because a blood vessel supplying blood to the heart has become blocked.

“When a person is having a heart attack, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are closed, and the longer that the blood vessel is closed, the more damage that is done to the heart,” said Dr. Garland Green, medical director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at Baton Rouge General.
