Golden Arches Getting a Makeover: McDonald’s Phasing Out Self-Serve Drinks, Ramping Up Expansion

Big changes are brewing at McDonald’s, and we’re not just talking about the coffee! The fast-food giant is embarking on a multi-year transformation that will see significant shifts in how you get your soda, how you order, and even where you grab your next Big Mac.

One of the most notable changes for customers will be the gradual disappearance of self-serve soda fountains. While the company initially announced this move in 2023, the full phase-out is expected by 2032.

Don’t worry, your favorite fizzy drinks aren’t going anywhere; they’ll simply be served by staff from behind the counter. This move aims to create a more “consistent experience” for all customers, whether they’re ordering in-store, through the drive-thru, or via digital channels.

This shift also reflects the increasing trend of digital orders over traditional in-person transactions. In fact, many locations already moved beverages behind the counter during the 2020 pandemic.

But the drink fountain relocation is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. McDonald’s has ambitious plans to launch 8,000 new restaurants globally by the end of 2026, with an even grander vision of reaching 50,000 locations by 2027. This massive expansion will focus on high-traffic and emerging markets, while existing restaurants will also receive upgrades to align with new operational standards.

To keep up with demand and streamline the ordering process, McDonald’s is also revamping 27,000 drive-thru locations, introducing multi-lane formats for increased efficiency. They’re even integrating AI tools, developed in partnership with Google Cloud, to enhance the drive-thru experience.

Beyond operations, get ready for some new flavors hitting the menu! The highly anticipated Big Arch burger, featuring two beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, a mix of crispy fried and raw onions, lettuce, pickles, and a “tangy” Big Arch sauce, is set to make its U.S. debut on March 3. International fans have already raved about this burger, with one enthusiast on Reddit calling it “one of those burgers that hits the spot when you’re jonesing bad for a sublethal dose of fat and salt!”

Other exciting additions include a Hot Honey McCrispy sandwich and Snack Wrap, slated for release on January 27. Patrons will also have the option to add Hot Honey to any breakfast sandwich.

For those who crave something a little different, McSpicy bone-in chicken wings are currently being trialed at select Chicago locations. And for fans of CosMc’s, McDonald’s beverage-centric offshoot, there are reports of CosMc’s-inspired drinks being tested at 500 locations.

So, whether you’re a fan of a classic Quarter Pounder or eager to try the latest menu innovation, prepare for a refreshed McDonald’s experience in the years to come!
