Pinellas County Streamlines Tree Removal Permit Process, Offers Incentives for Planting Native Flora

Pinellas County has revised its tree-trimming and removal permitting rules, streamlining the process for homeowners. The updates to Chapter 58 of the County Code took effect Jan. 23 and include incentives for planting native trees and shrubs. Permits are still required for certain types of tree removal.

Under the revised rules, a county permit is required to remove trees with trunks at least four inches wide or palms taller than six feet. Pinellas County said the changes apply in unincorporated areas and in Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore. The county noted the updates are not retroactive and do not include refunds for past payments.

Homesteaded single-family homeowners may only need a permit to remove trees larger than 24 inches in diameter. Anyone removing trees in a public right-of-way must obtain a Utilization Permit, according to Pinellas County…
