MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) —The Mobile Carnival Museum on Government Street in downtown Mobile is back open after six months of upgrades.

It has been a crown jewel in the Port City for decades. Curator Cart Blackwell says the museum went through a top-to-bottom overhaul.
“People will notice floor-to-ceiling changes. Historic floors were refinished, new carpeting installed, all walls painted, new lighting, and new displays,” Blackwell explained.
Blackwell said the building hadn’t been updated in 20 years. Some drapery was removed, and rooms painted white. Memorabilia was added. The renovation gave them a way to reimagine the space. The new lighting really illuminates objects like never before.
As Mardi Gras has grown, Blackwell says there was a need to display more regalia from more mystic societies. In fact, they added eleven costumes from various mystic societies. Blackwell says they took a hard look at how they would showcase items once everything was removed from the museum during the renovations.
“The whole of the museum was emptied, and things were conserved either on site or sent to experts to be done,” Blackwell said. “So literally, the museum was recreated and new. We’ve got some old favorites that everyone loves, but some new pieces…pieces that had not been on display in a while. There’s a lot of excitement for people to see.”…
