Opinion | Closing the African American Studies program is a gut wrenching loss to faculty and students

In the middle of January the UI Office of Strategic Communications put out a news release that the University of Iowa would conduct a review of low enrollment undergraduate majors to assess their demand and alignment with the current job market.

The decision to review UI majors came from a 2025 workforce alignment report conducted by the Iowa Board of Regents. The report highlighted undergraduate majors that currently had less than 25 students enrolled in said programs. One of the majors listed was the African American Studies major offered at the university.

Not even a month later, faculty in the African American Studies department informed students the major and the program will be closed, according to emails obtained by The Daily Iowan.
