Student files lawsuit against U of M after being wrongly accused of AI use to write paper

A University of Michigan undergraduate student has filed a federal lawsuit claiming she was wrongly accused of using artificial intelligence to write class papers and now faces transcript sanctions that she says are delaying her graduation.

The complaint, filed February 9, 2026, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan under the pseudonym Jane Doe, names the Regents of the University of Michigan, a graduate student instructor, a faculty member, and officials in the Office of Student Academic Affairs.

According to the lawsuit, the student has diagnosed Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The university had notice of her disabilities and approved accommodations before the academic misconduct accusations began…
