California Police Station Temporarily Closed After Civil War-Era Cannonballs Turned In By Local Resident

A Southern California police station was temporarily closed to the public Thursday after a resident turned in what appeared to be Civil War-era cannonballs.

The Apple Valley Police Department said a local resident visited the station Thursday morning and brought what he believed to be Civil War-era cannonballs for “evaluation.” When staff saw that the devices appeared to contain fuses and may be explosive, safety protocols were “immediately” implemented.

Personnel closed the station to the public and established a safety perimeter while awaiting the arrival of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Bombs and Arson Division. The bomb squad safely removed the devices for “proper disposal.”…
