Fulton Elementary Students Prepare for TPWD Great Texas Birding Classic

Excitement is building in Martha McLeod’s birding class at Fulton Elementary as students prepare for the upcoming TPWD Great Texas Birding Classic.

This week, students traveled to the birding center in Port Aransas to sharpen their bird identification and teamwork skills. To provide more personalized instruction, the class was divided into two groups on separate days, allowing for more one-on-one guidance with each young birder. So far, six elementary teams and two middle/high school teams have registered for the competition.

The weather has been picture-perfect for birdwatching, and students made the most of it. During their wetland visits, both groups identified more than 40 bird species. Among the highlights were Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers, Roseate Spoonbills, White Ibis, Osprey, Belted Kingfishers, Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, American Avocets, and Black-necked Stilts, just to name a few…
