Johnson County approves $20,000 flagpole to improve worker safety

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved spending $20,000 to install a 50-foot flagpole in front of the courthouse because of safety concerns for employees who have to climb to the building’s dome to raise and lower flags.

Jason Mick, a groundsman who works at the Johnson County Courthouse, said the current process requires climbing flights of stairs and steep ladders to reach the flagpole on top of the dome.

“You have to climb this ladder. This is where you need flashlights, even during the daylight it’s not the best,” Mick said…
