From the Archives: Postcards from Naples and Southwest Florida

The idea for the postcard originated in Germany in 1865, but the first official postcard was issued by the Austrian government on Oct. 1, 1869. The cards were 8×12 cm, made of cardboard and had a blank side for messages and a printed side for the address. They were considered quick, efficient and inexpensive, and made correspondence more accessible to everyone.

Postcards popularity increased in the early 20th century due to their cheapness and speed and a craze for collecting them. Postcards were used to send messages, well wishes and love, and to promote new ideas…
