Nearly $29 million has been allocated for 21 new transportation projects in the Greater Akron area. The funding was approved by the Policy Committee of the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) during its first meeting of 2026, according to a community announcement.
AMATS is the federally designated metropolitan planning organization that serves Portage and Summit counties, as well as northeastern Wayne County. The agency manages the federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG), Resurfacing, and Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) funding programs for the region.
Project selection process
The selection process for these projects began last fall, with AMATS considering 71 funding applications from local project sponsors, according to the announcement.
