Merry Widows wail on beautiful Sunday in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Joe Cain’s Merry Widows continue their tradition of mourning the man who brought carnival back to Mobile in the 19th Century. Bright skies led to a big turnout on Sunday.

With people jam-packed along the road that leads straight to the Church Street graveyard, the simple approach of a tour bus gets a cheer.

“Well, you know what? I love those old ladies.I want to be one of the widows. Well, it’s if I ever did. But, yes, this is a really good, exciting thing for people to see,” said an excited Susan Snyder from Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

This is a tradition that calls back to the city’s history. And it’s probably the most unique Mardi Gras tradition in Mobile.

“Well, there was only one Joe Cain, and he was from Mobile, right. So, yeah, it is the most unique mobile, you know, tradition. New Orleans doesn’t have Joe Cane. There’s only one. And we appreciate him bringing Mardi Gras back to Mobile after the Civil War,” said a man in a green mask with horns calling himself “Green Devil.”…
