In a development making headlines, Cristian Geovanni Rojas Benitez, a 37-year-old overstayed visa holder from Mexico, has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars for a confrontation that could have ended far worse. Rojas Benitez tried to use his vehicle against a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent during an attempt by federal officers to take him into custody for immigration violations on June 23, 2025, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
After being charged last August and pleading guilty in October, Rojas Benitez admitted to intentionally driving his pickup truck towards the agent, this all coming on the back of previous offenses including false identification to law enforcement, operating a vehicle without ignition interlock, knowing and intentional possession of a controlled substance, and driving an unregistered vehicle, Rojas Benitez’s history within Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas records indicates a pattern of dismissive behavior towards legal boundaries. On the morning federal agents caught up with him, court documents reveal they surveilled a home in Downingtown, Pennsylvania; when Rojas Benitez hopped into his pickup and attempted to leave, agents moved in for the arrest.
What should have been a routine arrest quickly escalated. Rojas Benitez refused to exit his truck or even roll down his window for the officers who had cornered him, as per the court filings. Law enforcement gave him several warnings that further non-compliance would require them to force entry into his vehicle.
